| How copyright infringement can affect you |
| If you make money from selling your patterns,
the effect of copyright infringement is probably obvious to you.
If people are distributing infringing copies of your patterns for free,
it probably means lost sales for you.
But some designers or publishers distribute some patterns for free, and therefore think that unauthorized copying doesn't matter. Does it? Think about these points: Do you want the users of your patterns to respect other designer's and publishers copyrights? There may come a time when you want to be able to sell your patterns, instead of giving them away for free. Giving away free patterns might be good advertising, but it doesn't guarantee that the people who receive copies of your patterns will buy your other products. The person who copies your pattern might not copy all of it. Your name might be removed--or changed to somebody else's name so that somebody else gets the credit for designing your pattern. The association between you and your free pattern may be lost. |
