WHEN IS A FILLING PATTERN A DIAPER DESIGN?

The term Diaper is used in weaving and embroidery to describe designs that have certain characteristics.

To the left is a 17th century filling pattern from a museum textile.

It consists of  two alternating elements which are the same size.  They are offset by one, both horizontally and vertically.

As originally charted

AS ORIGINALLY CHARTED

The design has a clearly defined vertical axis (Red Line)
A clearly defined horizontal axis (Green Line) and
A clearly defined diagonal axis (Purple Line)

Rotated 45 degrees

ROTATED 45°

The design changes in appearance, but retains its vertical, horizontal and diagonal axes.

Rotated 90 degrees

ROTATED 90°

The design not only retains its axes, but is identical to the original design.
